My eldest son Elliot was clearing some Ivy from the kitchen garden wall and let out a triumphant cry. A triumphant walk follwed with enclosed gardening gloves. A very fine but rather small Common Toad Was produced and duly recorded. I have to to say that I didn’t know the Latin name for a toad but Bufo bufo is superb.
The dawn chorus here was superb. It’s Easter Monday and sunrise is at 5.58 am. The chorus started perhaps at 5 am or so and was in full flood by dawn. And now sat in bed with tea the birds have dispersed about their business - now just the strident Calls of a wood pigeon, some tinny whistles from a tree creeper on the Lime Tree and the stuttering high pitches breaking calls of Blue Tits - chattering House Sparrows around the Manor’s yard. Everyone sounds urgent at this time of year.
I am having a “royal birthday” for my 50 th today as the boys go back to school tomorrow for the Summer term. Waking up here with this weather - it has been 23/24 degrees in the afternoon just now is the best birthday a little boy could have.

One more tea and then I am off out down the wood to search for Summer migrants.
